How the Acorns referral program works

Acorns gives both sides 5 dollars invested as Reward Shares, meaning ETFs matching the recipient's own selected portfolio, bought by Acorns and deposited into their Invest account. The referrer needs an active account in good standing, and the friend must never have started an Acorns signup before.

01The terms

What the program pays

Referrer gets
USD 5 invested as Reward Shares, in ETFs corresponding to the referrer's selected portfolio
Referred friend gets
USD 5 invested as Reward Shares on the same basis
Qualification
The friend must use the referrer's personal invitation code or link, must never previously have been an Acorns user or begun the signup process, and must be a US resident or citizen, or armed services personnel with a US address deployed overseas. The referrer needs an open, active Acorns Invest account in good standing.
Expiry
Each promotion runs for a stated promotional period; the programme is a rotating set of limited-time offers.
02The mechanic

What makes this program different

Paying in the product, matched to the recipient's own choices. Reward Shares are ETFs corresponding to the portfolio the user already selected, so the reward arrives as more of a decision they have already made. It cannot be spent elsewhere and it deepens the position the account exists to hold.

03The design

Why it works

A reward that lands inside the investing account makes the account more used, which is the metric a robo-adviser is actually optimising.

Matching the reward to the user's existing portfolio avoids handing them an asset they did not choose and would sell.

Requiring an account in good standing keeps the programme closed to dormant and delinquent users.

Running as rotating promotions lets Acorns re-price the offer without amending a standing programme.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • Pay in the thing your product is for, where you can. Money that leaves the account teaches nothing about the account.
  • Match the reward to a choice the customer already made rather than picking for them.
  • Structure the programme as dated promotions if you need to move the number often.
What we could not verify
  • The 5-dollar figure describes the promotion live on the date verified. Acorns' terms describe the referral programme as a set of limited-time offerings that change, so a different amount may be running at any time and the terms page lists many separate promotions. Acorns publishes no cap on the number of referrals in these terms. The programme is US-only.
05Questions

Acorns referrals, answered

What does Acorns give for a referral?

5 dollars to each side, invested as Reward Shares rather than paid as cash. The shares are ETFs corresponding to the recipient's own selected portfolio and are bought by Acorns on their behalf.

Who counts as a new Acorns user?

Someone who has never been an Acorns user, never subscribed, and never begun the signup process. Starting an application and abandoning it is enough to disqualify a referral.

Is the Acorns referral amount fixed?

No. Acorns runs the programme as rotating limited-time promotions, so the amount depends on which promotion is live when the referral is made.
