Five questions worth asking every vendor

Does attribution survive a cross-domain hop?
Marketing site on one domain, app on another, is the single most common place tracking silently dies. Ask to see it demonstrated, not described.
What happens when the cookie is gone?
Safari's ITP and ad-blockers remove it for a large share of traffic. If the answer is only "we set a cookie", attribution is already leaking.
Can the conversion be something other than a purchase?

What does referral tracking software actually do?
It ties a new customer back to the person who introduced them, and holds that association long enough for the conversion to happen. Does it work without a checkout?
Yes. Attribution runs on events, not on an order confirmation. A signup, a booked demo, a closed deal or a first invoice can each be the conversion. That matters in B2B, where the thing worth rewarding often happens weeks after the click and never touches a cart.
What happens when someone clicks on mobile and buys on desktop?
Device fingerprinting plus the referral code carried through signup covers most of it. No tracker resolves every cross-device journey honestly, and any vendor claiming otherwise is worth a second look. What matters is that you can see the unresolved ones. Silent drops are the problem.
How is this different from UTM tags in Google Analytics?
