How the Zerodha referral program works

Zerodha pays 10% of the brokerage that every eligible referred account generates, plus 300 reward points per account opened, redeemable for Zerodha services. There is no cap on referrals. The catch sits on the advocate's side: to keep earning the brokerage share you need at least three successful referrals in the past twelve months, and withdrawals only open once the balance passes ₹100.

02The mechanic

What makes this program different

A recurring revenue share with a renewal condition attached to the advocate. Most referral programmes pay once; Zerodha pays a percentage of the referred customer's activity indefinitely, but switches it off if the advocate stops referring. The annuity has to be re-earned.

03The design

Why it works

Paying a share of ongoing revenue aligns the advocate with customer quality, not volume. A dormant referred account earns them nothing.

The three-in-twelve-months condition converts a one-off payout into a reason to stay active.

Reward points redeemable only for Zerodha services keep part of the cost inside the business.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • If your revenue is recurring, consider sharing a slice of it instead of paying a bounty. It selects for advocates who bring good customers.
  • Attach an ongoing eligibility condition to a revenue share, or you will pay an annuity forever on work done once.
What we could not verify
  • Zerodha distinguishes this from its Authorised Person programme, which has separate eligibility requirements. The referee-side benefit is not published as a cash amount.
