Fitness Buddy Pass
A template for gyms, studios and fitness apps, built on the bring-a-friend mechanic that already happens informally. The friend gets a genuine trial rather than a discount, and the member is rewarded after the referred person's second billing cycle — the point at which a fitness membership has actually stuck.
- Referrer reward
- One free month, credited after the referred member's second payment
- Referred reward
- A guest pass covering a genuine trial period
- Trigger
- In-app after a logged session streak, and at the front desk
- Qualifying event
- Referred member's second consecutive billing payment
- Eligibility
- Active members; referred person must not have held a membership in the last 12 months
- Payout
- Free month applied at the referrer's next billing date
Why this template is shaped this way
Waiting for the second payment is the key decision. Fitness memberships have famously high early churn, and paying at signup means paying for members who never returned after week two.
A guest pass converts better than a discount because the barrier is unfamiliarity rather than price — the friend needs to walk in once with someone they know.
The twelve-month lapse rule stops the program paying to re-acquire members who were about to return anyway.
Where this template goes wrong
One mistake dominates: paying at signup in a category famous for week-two churn. After that, the slow leaks are unchecked guest passes and free months handed to members on annual plans.
- Paying at signup is the standard mistake in this category and the reason many gym programs lose money
- Guest passes are heavily abused without identity checks at the door
- A free month given to a member on an annual plan is worth far more than one given monthly — set the rule per plan type
Why wait until the second payment?
Because early churn in fitness is high. A member who has paid twice has passed the point where most cancellations happen, so the reward is tied to a membership that actually stuck.
Is a guest pass better than a discount?
Usually, because the barrier for a prospective member is unfamiliarity rather than price. A pass that gets them through the door with someone they know addresses the real objection.
