What is a referral link?
A referral link is a personal URL containing an identifier unique to one existing customer. When someone follows it, the business records which customer sent them, so a reward can be paid once the referred person completes a qualifying action such as a first purchase.
- A referral link is a destination plus an identifier — the identifier is the fragile part.
- Links and codes fail in opposite circumstances; offering only a link loses referrals silently.
- Point the link at a page written for someone with no context, not at the homepage.
- The link's validity and the attribution window are two separate clocks.
What is inside a referral link?
A destination and an identifier. The destination is wherever you want the referred person to land; the identifier is the part that says who sent them, carried either as a query parameter or built into the path. Everything else is presentation.
Because the identifier usually travels as a query parameter, it is also the part most easily lost — several messaging and social apps rewrite or strip parameters when a link is shared.
How is a referral link different from an affiliate link?
Mechanically they are near-identical; the difference is who holds it and what it obliges. An affiliate link belongs to a marketer promoting to an audience for commission, which brings disclosure duties. A referral link belongs to a customer introducing people they know personally.
Why do referral links lose attribution?
Because the identifier has to survive a journey it does not control. The link is shared, opened, possibly on a different device, and the purchase may happen days later. Attribution is lost at any of those steps, and the loss is silent.
- Apps that strip or rewrite query parameters when a link is pasted
- The referred person opens on mobile and buys on desktop
- Consent for the storage the identifier depends on is declined
- The purchase falls outside the attribution window
- The link is shared as a screenshot, so it is never clicked at all
Where should a referral link point?
To a page that makes sense to someone who has never heard of you, not to your homepage. The referred visitor arrives with a recommendation from a friend and no context; a page that names the offer and continues the conversation converts far better than a generic landing.
Should referral links be short?
Yes, where it does not cost you the identifier. Short links are more likely to be pasted intact and read aloud, but every redirect is another point at which the parameter can be dropped — so shortening is worth testing on the paths you actually expect people to use.
Do referral links expire?
The link itself normally remains valid while the advocate's account is active. What expires is the attribution window on the other side — the period after a click during which a purchase still counts. Those are two different clocks and are frequently confused.
Is a referral link enough on its own?
Rarely. A link with no code alongside it silently loses every referral that travelled by screenshot, by word of mouth, or across devices before sign-in. Offering both is the single cheapest improvement most programs can make to measured participation.
How do referral links work?
The link carries an identifier unique to one customer. When someone follows it, that identifier is recorded against the visitor, and if they complete the qualifying action within the attribution window the referring customer earns the reward.
Are referral links and affiliate links the same?
They work the same way technically. The difference is the relationship: affiliate links belong to marketers promoting for commission and carry disclosure obligations, while referral links belong to customers introducing people they know.
Why did my referral link not track?
Usually the identifier was lost in transit — stripped by the app the link was shared in, dropped when the person switched devices, or expired because the purchase fell outside the attribution window. Entering a referral code instead avoids all three.

- US Federal Trade Commission — Disclosure duties for endorsements and paid recommendations
