How the Airbnb referral program works
Airbnb's referral terms open with a notice that the guest programme has ended. While it ran, it paid travel credit across three separate reservation types and capped one member at 5,000 dollars for homes and hosting, plus 2,000 for experiences. Credits expired after a year.
Airbnb runs a program but does not publish the amount
That is a finding, not a gap. The mechanic below is published; the value is not, and any specific figure circulating for this brand comes from third-party sites rather than the company.
What makes this program different
Three separate qualifying events from one referral. A referred friend who booked a stay, attended an experience and became a host earned the advocate three distinct credits. Most programmes pay once per person; Airbnb paid once per behaviour, which made a single referral worth several times more.
Why it works
Paying per behaviour rather than per person rewards the referral that turns into a fully engaged user, not just a signup.
Excluding stays of 28 nights or more keeps the credit off long-term rentals, where the discount would dwarf the margin.
Barring the referring member from hosting the reservation closes the obvious self-dealing route on a two-sided marketplace.
Settling on the completed stay rather than the booking removes cancellations entirely.
What to copy
- On a marketplace, decide whether a referral pays once or once per role. Paying per role prices the referral at what it is actually worth.
- Exclude the transaction sizes where a flat credit stops being proportionate.
- Say the member cannot be on both sides of the transaction, or a two-sided marketplace will find that gap.
- The programme has ended and no credit is payable. Airbnb never published amounts in these terms, placing them in the referral invitation instead, so any figure quoted elsewhere describes one campaign. Airbnb operates a separate host referral programme with its own terms, which this teardown does not cover.
Airbnb referrals, answered
Does Airbnb still have a referral program?
Not the guest one. Airbnb's terms page opens with a notice that the Guest Referral Program has ended, and says the terms remain only for people who took part before it closed.
How much could an Airbnb referral earn?
Up to 5,000 dollars in travel credit across qualifying home and hosting reservations, plus 2,000 for experiences. The per-referral amounts were set in the invitation, never in the terms.
Why do roundups still describe Airbnb's referral program?
Because the terms page stayed published after the programme closed, and published write-ups are rarely rechecked. It is the same pattern as Booking.com, whose terms have announced its closure since 2019.
Airbnb is not a ReferralFlo customer and this page is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Airbnb. All terms described here are taken from Airbnb’s own published materials as at 7 September 2026 and may have changed since. Trade marks are the property of their respective owners.
