How the Backblaze referral program works

Backblaze denominates its whole referral programme in months. The friend gets a free month of Computer Backup to trial; when they buy any plan, the referrer's next renewal is discounted by the equivalent of one month's charge. There is no stated limit, and a referrer with several computers gets the same discount for each.

01The terms

What the program pays

Referrer gets
A discount equal to one month's charge on the next renewal for every friend who purchases, whichever plan they choose; multi-computer accounts get the discount per computer
Referred friend gets
A free month of Backblaze Computer Backup to trial
Qualification
The referrer needs a paid account in good standing billed to a credit card; accounts on a trial, a prepaid code, or in a Business Group are not eligible. The friend must be a new customer, and the reward lands only when they purchase a subscription.
Cap
None stated. The landing page says an unlimited number of free months, one per purchasing friend
02The mechanic

What makes this program different

A reward that scales itself twice, and never names a price. The referrer's discount equals one month of whatever the friend actually buys, so a pricier plan pays more automatically, and it multiplies across the referrer's own computers. No dollar figure appears anywhere. Everything is denominated in months of service, so the programme's cost lives inside Backblaze's own margin.

03The design

Why it works

Pegging the discount to the friend's plan makes the reward self-adjusting as pricing changes.

Multiplying the discount per computer rewards the heaviest accounts without a separate tier.

Restricting eligibility to card-billed paid accounts filters out trial and prepaid users whose renewals cannot absorb a discount.

Rewards in service-months keep churned users from extracting any residual value.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • Define the reward as a ratio of what the friend buys instead of a fixed figure that needs updating.
  • Check your reward works mechanically for every account shape you sell; Backblaze wrote the multi-computer case down.
  • Exclude account types that cannot consume the reward rather than letting them earn dead credit.
What we could not verify
  • The programme belongs to the personal Computer Backup product only; Business Groups and B2 storage sit outside it. Backblaze's help-centre mirror of these terms is behind a bot wall, but the same content on the main site is the source here.
