How the Coursera referral program works
Coursera discontinued its referral programme on 25 October 2024, and says so at the top of the still-published terms. While it ran, both sides received the same reward: a first month of Coursera Plus for $1, limited to one redemption per person, in the US, Canada excluding Quebec, and the UK.
What the program pays
What makes this program different
The reward was the product itself. The heaviest users could not earn it. An advocate already subscribed to Coursera Plus could refer but received nothing, because the only reward on offer was a discount on the thing they were already paying for. The terms also wrote disclosure into the programme: advocates had to state clearly that they would receive a reward, with termination as the stated penalty for failing to.
Why it works
A $1 first month costs almost nothing per redemption while giving both sides an identical, easily understood offer.
Same-country matching kept the discount aligned with regional pricing and payment rails.
Mandatory advocate disclosure baked endorsement compliance into the terms instead of leaving it to a policy page.
Excluding prior trial users defined the friend as genuinely incremental demand.
What to copy
- Check whether your reward is worthless to your best customers; a discount on what they already pay is exactly that.
- Put the disclosure obligation on the advocate in the terms, with a stated consequence.
- Publish the discontinuation in the terms themselves when a programme ends; Coursera's dated notice is why this page can be precise.
- The programme is discontinued and these terms are recorded for what they show about design, not as an offer anyone can join. Links generated before the 25 October 2024 cut-off were redeemable only within the original promotion window, which ran to the end of 2024.
