How the DoorDash merchant referral program works

DoorDash pays 1,000 dollars for referring a restaurant that signs up within 30 days and completes 15 orders within 60 days of activation, and gives the restaurant 500 dollars as well. It also asks the referrer to get the owner's permission before referring them.

02The mechanic

What makes this program different

Asking permission before referring. DoorDash's first instruction is to get the owner's consent, which reframes the mechanic from a shared link into an introduction. At a thousand dollars a referral the incentive to spam restaurant owners would otherwise be considerable, and the consent step is what stops the programme becoming cold outreach.

03The design

Why it works

Requiring 15 completed orders means the reward follows a restaurant that is actually trading, not one that merely signed a contract.

A consent step protects the merchants DoorDash wants to keep from being harassed by people chasing a bounty.

Paying the referrer twice what the restaurant gets reflects who did the work of finding them.

Two separate clocks, 30 days to sign and 60 to trade, stop a stale referral being claimed much later.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • Price a B2B referral against the customer's lifetime value, not against what a consumer referral pays.
  • Where the reward is large enough to motivate spam, require consent before the referral is submitted.
  • Qualify on the referred business actually operating, not on it signing up.
What we could not verify
  • This is the merchant programme. DoorDash runs separate Dasher and consumer referral programmes on entirely different terms, and this teardown does not describe them. The page carries an asterisk against the 1,000-dollar figure pointing to fuller terms, and eligibility is limited to restaurants meeting criteria set out separately.
05Questions

DoorDash referrals, answered

How much does DoorDash pay for a merchant referral?

1,000 dollars to the referrer and 500 dollars to the referred restaurant, once that restaurant completes 15 orders within 60 days of activation.

Do you need the restaurant's permission?

Yes. DoorDash's first step is to get permission from the owner or operator before submitting the referral, which turns the mechanic into an introduction rather than a shared link.

The restaurant must sign up within 30 days of the referral and complete 15 orders within 60 days of activation. Both clocks must be met.
