How the Etsy referral program works
Etsy pays sellers to recruit other sellers, in free listing credits rather than money. Only genuinely new sellers count: a friend who has already begun setting up a shop no longer qualifies. Where several people invited the same person, only the invitation that was used earns anything.
Etsy runs a program but does not publish the amount
That is a finding, not a gap. The mechanic below is published; the value is not, and any specific figure circulating for this brand comes from third-party sites rather than the company.
What makes this program different
Recruiting supply, not demand. Etsy is a marketplace with no shortage of buyers and a permanent appetite for sellers, so the referral programme points existing sellers at people who might open a shop. The reward is listing credits, which are only spendable by doing the thing Etsy wants.
Why it works
Paying in listing credits costs Etsy the fee it would have charged, not cash, and the credit is only usable by listing.
Sellers know other makers, which makes them a better recruiting channel for supply than any advert.
Disqualifying anyone who has started setting up a shop stops the programme paying for sellers already on their way in.
Awarding only the invitation actually used settles the multi-inviter dispute before it happens.
What to copy
- On a two-sided marketplace, work out which side is scarce and point the programme at that one.
- Set the disqualifier at the earliest signal of intent, not at completion, or you pay for people already arriving.
- State plainly who wins when several people invited the same person.
- Etsy publishes no fixed number of credits, stating that the number varies with the current promotion, so any figure quoted elsewhere describes one campaign. Etsy also notes participation may be limited by country or currency and that credits are not transferable or exchangeable for cash. This is the seller programme; it is not a buyer refer-a-friend scheme.
Etsy referrals, answered
What does Etsy give for a seller referral?
Free listing credits to both sides. Etsy does not publish a fixed number, saying the amount available varies with the current promotion.
Who counts as a new Etsy seller?
Someone who has not already begun setting up a shop. Starting the process, not just completing it, is enough to make the referral ineligible.
What if two people invite the same friend?
Only the seller whose invitation was actually used receives credits. Etsy states this directly rather than leaving it to a dispute.
