How the Mint Mobile referral program works

Mint Mobile gives the advocate 45 dollars in service credit and the friend 15. Two published caps disagree: four referrals a year, and 600 dollars a year, which four referrals cannot reach. An advocate whose account lapses loses credits already earned.

01The terms

What the program pays

Referrer gets
USD 45 in service account credit per successful referral, posted no sooner than 15 days after the friend activates
Referred friend gets
USD 15 credit on activating a new account, posted no sooner than 15 days after activation
Qualification
The advocate must hold an eligible, active Mint account. The friend must activate a new line. Credits are valid only against service plan payments and cannot be exchanged for cash or merchandise.
Cap
Four referrals per advocate per calendar year, and separately a maximum of USD 600 in account credits per year. The two do not reconcile. Friends still earn their USD 15 for referrals above the advocate's four-referral limit
Expiry
If an advocate's account reaches cancelled status, 60 days after a renewal date passes unpaid, they may no longer refer, no longer earn, and lose credits already earned.
02The mechanic

What makes this program different

Clawing back earned credit when the advocate stops paying. Everything else here either pays or does not; Mint Mobile removes credits already awarded if the account lapses 60 days past a renewal. The reward is contingent on staying a customer, not on having been one.

03The design

Why it works

Tying earned credit to a live account makes the reward a retention mechanic as much as an acquisition one.

Paying the advocate three times what the friend gets suits a market where switching networks is the hard part, not being persuaded.

Fifteen days before posting outlasts the window in which a fraudulent activation is usually caught.

Letting friends keep their credit above the advocate's cap means the referred person is never penalised for a limit they never saw.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • Decide whether an earned reward survives the advocate leaving, and say so up front instead of during a dispute.
  • Never let the referred person lose out because the advocate hit a ceiling.
  • Check your caps agree with each other. Two published limits that cannot both be true is worse than one.
What we could not verify
  • The four-referral and USD 600 caps are both published and cannot both bind: four referrals at 45 dollars is 180. Which applies in practice is not stated. Mint Mobile also notes that if a referral email address has previously opted out of its marketing, no email is sent and Mint is not required to say so, which means a referral can silently never arrive.
05Questions

Mint Mobile referrals, answered

How much does Mint Mobile pay for a referral?

45 dollars in service credit to the advocate and 15 to the friend, both posted no sooner than 15 days after the friend activates service.

How many Mint Mobile referrals can you make?

The terms say four per calendar year, and separately that credits cap at 600 dollars a year. Four referrals at 45 dollars comes to 180, so the two limits do not reconcile.

Can Mint Mobile take back referral credit?

Yes. If an account reaches cancelled status, 60 days after a renewal passes unpaid, the advocate loses credits already earned as well as the ability to refer.
