How the Testbook referral program works

Testbook pays the referrer up to 10% of the purchase value as cashback into a bank account, and gives the referred friend up to 12% off. The catch is administrative: a referrer eligible for UPI cashback must verify and save a UPI ID before the reward can be paid, and cashback lands only 48 hours after the purchase.

01The terms

What the program pays

Referrer gets
Up to 10% of the purchase value as cashback, credited directly to a bank account
Referred friend gets
Up to 12% discount on a Testbook purchase
Qualification
The friend must sign up through the referral link, or redeem the code in the Referral section, before making any purchase, and must buy a Testbook Pass. A friend already referred by someone else does not count. Cashback is credited only 48 hours after the purchase, and referrers eligible for UPI cashback must verify and save a UPI ID in the Refer and Earn section.
02The mechanic

What makes this program different

A payout that depends on something the referrer must do before sharing. Testbook states it is compulsory for referrers eligible for UPI cashback to verify and save a UPI ID in the Refer and Earn section, so a referral can qualify on every other count and still pay nothing because a payment detail was never entered. The rewards themselves are percentages of the sale on both sides.

03The design

Why it works

Percentage rewards keep the payout proportional on a catalogue where a pass costs far more than a single test series.

Collecting payout details when someone joins, not when they earn, removes the step where payouts usually stall.

A 48-hour hold after purchase gives a window to catch a reversed or fraudulent transaction before cash leaves.

Requiring the code to be redeemed before purchase settles attribution at the moment of sale rather than in a support ticket.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • Collect payout details as part of joining the programme, not as a step after a reward is earned.
  • Say plainly that a reward is void without those details, so the requirement reads as a rule, not a fault.
  • Require the code to be applied before checkout where you want attribution settled without dispute.
What we could not verify
  • Testbook publishes aggregate programme statistics, not per-referral guarantees: a March figure of 8,798 participating students who referred 16,749 others for a total of Rs 24,65,294 in cashback, and Rs 1,05,65,294 paid across 2024. These are programme-wide marketing figures, not amounts an individual referrer can expect, and both reward rates are stated as up to a percentage rather than a fixed one. No cap on referrals is published.
05Questions

Testbook referrals, answered

How much cashback does Testbook give for a referral?

Up to 10% of the purchase value, credited directly to the referrer's bank account 48 hours after the referred friend's purchase.

What discount does a Testbook referral give the friend?

Up to 12% off a Testbook purchase, provided they sign up through the link or redeem the code in the Referral section before buying, and then purchase a Testbook Pass.

Why was Testbook referral cashback not paid?

The most likely cause is the UPI rule. Testbook states it is compulsory for referrers eligible for UPI cashback to verify and save a UPI ID in the Refer and Earn section, and a friend already referred by someone else does not qualify.
