How the Udemy referral program works
Udemy gives the friend 20% off their first year of an annual Personal Plan and the advocate 20% off their own. Then it ends. An advocate may refer exactly one friend, ever, and monthly plans and individual course purchases never qualify on either side.
What the program pays
What makes this program different
A lifetime cap of one. Most programmes limit the rate at which an advocate earns; Udemy limits the total to a single referral and closes the account to the programme afterwards. That prices the mechanic as a one-off conversion tool rather than a channel worth cultivating.
Why it works
One referral per person makes the maximum cost of any advocate exactly one discounted subscription, knowable at signup.
Restricting it to the annual plan means the discount is only ever given against a year of committed revenue.
Matching both sides at 20% keeps the offer to a single sentence, which is all a referral message gets.
What to copy
- Decide whether you want a channel or a coupon. A lifetime cap of one is a coupon, and that is a legitimate choice if the maths says so.
- Exclude the plan lengths where the discount would cost more than the commitment it buys.
- State the cap in the FAQ where people look, not only in terms nobody opens.
- Udemy does not publish an expiry on the discount in this article, and the FAQ points to regional availability without listing the regions. Current annual Personal Plan subscribers are addressed separately, so an existing subscriber's eligibility is not the same as a new one's.
Udemy referrals, answered
How many friends can you refer to Udemy?
One. Udemy states that after a first successful referral an advocate is no longer eligible to refer additional friends, which is a lifetime limit rather than an annual one.
Does a monthly Udemy subscription qualify?
No. The referral applies only to the annual Personal Plan. Individual course purchases and monthly subscriptions do not trigger a reward on either side.
What does each side get?
20% off. The friend gets it on their first year of an annual Personal Plan, and the advocate gets 20% off purchasing their own annual Personal Plan.
