How the WHOOP referral program works
WHOOP pays referrals in time, not money: one month of membership credit to the referrer for every friend referred, and one free month for the friend when they join. The referrer's credit is released only after the friend passes the 30-day return window or makes a second payment, whichever comes first, typically 30 to 60 days.

The reward is denominated entirely in membership months, which cost WHOOP margin rather than cash, and none of it exists until the friend is past the point of returning the hardware. Prepaid members are handled in the same currency: their renewal date simply moves out a month per referral.
Why it works
Waiting out the 30-day return window means no credit is ever paid on a subscription that unwinds.
Month-denominated rewards keep the payout inside the subscription, where its cost is margin, not cash.
Requiring an active membership at award time stops cancelling members harvesting credits on the way out.
Extending prepaid renewal dates gives annual members the identical reward without a parallel scheme.
What to copy
- If you sell hardware with a return window, release referral rewards only after it closes.
- Denominate rewards in subscription time when retention is the metric you actually buy with them.
- Define the award condition, active membership at crediting, so end-of-life accounts cannot collect.
- Referral credits cannot be used toward hardware purchases or upgrade fees, are non-transferable, and do not apply to memberships bought through authorised retailers. The help article publishes no cap and no credit expiry, so those remain unstated rather than unlimited by promise.
