How the Booking.com referral program works

Booking.com closed its refer-a-friend programme on 15 October 2019 and says so at the top of the terms. The page is still published and indexed today. While it ran, the reward required the friend's stay to be confirmed by the property, and six US states were excluded outright.

01The terms

Booking.com runs a program but does not publish the amount

That is a finding, not a gap. The mechanic below is published; the value is not, and any specific figure circulating for this brand comes from third-party sites rather than the company.

Referrer gets
A referral bonus paid to a registered credit card, with no value stated in these terms
Referred friend gets
A referral bonus on the same basis, value unstated
Qualification
The friend had to create an eligible reservation through the referral link, and the stay itself had to be confirmed to Booking.com by the accommodation. Both parties needed an account, and a saved credit card where the bonus was paid to a card. Advocates could not use the link in paid promotion.
Cap
A maximum of 10 referral bonuses per advocate, and 11 per credit card or unique Wallet, counting one earned as a referee
Expiry
A bonus not redeemed within 14 months of being communicated as processing expired automatically.
02The mechanic

What makes this program different

Paying on the completed stay, not the booking. Booking.com required the accommodation itself to confirm the stay before any bonus existed, which is the strictest settlement condition in this corpus: not payment, not check-in, but the property confirming the guest was there.

03The design

Why it works

Settling on a property-confirmed stay removes cancellations, no-shows and refunds in one condition instead of three.

Capping per credit card as well as per account closes the obvious multi-account route.

Counting the bonus earned as a referee against the same ceiling stops a chain of accounts referring each other.

04The takeaway

What to copy

  • Where a third party can confirm the service happened, settle on their confirmation rather than on your own payment record.
  • Cap on the payment instrument, not only the account, if a user can hold several accounts.
  • When a programme ends, take the terms page down or date it clearly at the top. Leaving it live is how a dead programme keeps being written about.
What we could not verify
  • The programme is closed and no reward is payable. Booking.com never published a bonus value in these terms. The exclusion list is unusually broad: participants from New Mexico, California, Kansas, Connecticut, Tennessee and Hawaii were barred, alongside Booking Holdings staff and affiliate-programme participants.
05Questions

Booking.com referrals, answered

Does Booking.com have a referral program?

No. Booking.com's own terms state the programme shut down on 15 October 2019, and no reward has been issued for bookings made through a referral link since. The terms page remains published.

Why were six US states excluded?

Booking.com barred participants from New Mexico, California, Kansas, Connecticut, Tennessee and Hawaii without giving a reason. Broad state carve-outs of this kind usually reflect referral and sweepstakes law rather than commercial choice.

When did the reward become payable?

Only once the accommodation confirmed the friend's stay to Booking.com. A booking alone was never enough, which made cancellations and no-shows a non-issue.
